Keep Adding Beauty (though it may seem unnecessary or unneeded)
In 2016, I wrote a book. I couldn’t believe it. I actually did it. It took lots of time and energy and a heaping load of vulnerability. But I did it. I finished it. This sounds like a great thing, but afterwards I felt like maybe I had exhausted all of my creativity in the area of writing and I didn’t know if I would have anything more of value to say. At least not for a long time.
I thought why should I discipline myself to write consistently anyway? Who really needs another blog post out in the world? There are already so many out there.
I wonder how God feels about creating one more sunrise? I just looked out my window and was delighted by the sight of a glorious orange and magenta sky, and I thought, God designs these sunrises day after day … after day. I wonder if He ever says, “Man, won’t people be tired of these? There are only so many ways I can color the sky. Won’t they tire of seeing this day after day?”
The answer, of course, is no. We don’t get tired beautiful sunrises, or sunsets. Even if we’ve seen hundreds a year, we still look up and marvel at His art. Beauty doesn’t get old.
What beauty are you creating? What are you putting out into the world that contributes love and peace, joy and delight. I can assure you there’s something you’re doing.
Can I spur you on to keep doing it? Keep smiling at the people you come across and offering those compliments that may seem insignificant to you, but may mean the world to the recipient. Keep creating those meals for your family that seem to go unnoticed, but are building an arsenal of warm memories. Keep showing up on time and with a good attitude at work. It may feel hard to keep up, but your consistency is inspiring and refreshing to those around you. The humor you spread, the kind words you give, the warm meals you provide, the housekeeping you do day in and day out, the work you do with little fanfare … it’s adding beauty to this world. It’s adding goodness and delight. Those things never get old.
So whatever good work you are putting your hands to today, know that it makes a difference. Small as it may seem, it adds up. Obscure as it may seem, Someone is always looking. Do it unto Him. Offer it up to Him and He’ll receive it, multiply it and use it to bless others.
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. – Colossians 3:17
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. – Colossians 3:23-24
